MSM has been used as a dietary supplement for almost 40 years with no reports of intolerance or allergic reactions. MSM has no known contraindications with pharmaceutical drugs or over-the-counter medications. MSM appears to be non-toxic, with a toxicity profile similar to that of water. Your body flushes excess MSM after about a 12-hour period. It uses what is needed and the rest is discarded. However, taking amounts of MSM greater than your body's ability to absorb it may result in loose stools.

MSM is not a drug or medicine, and is unrelated to sulfa drugs, to which some people have an allergy. Sulfa-based drugs do not occur naturally and are used for the same purposes as antibiotics. The sulfa molecule is much larger and can cause severe reactions in some individuals. While many people are allergic to sulfa drugs, no similar reactions have ever been reported with MSM.

Please consult your physician before using MSM if you are pregnant, while nursing, for children under 2 years of age, or by persons on blood thinners such as Coumadin or Heparin. It is recommended that you inform your doctor when supplementing.

Detoxification One in five may experience detoxification symptoms in the first 1 to 10 days during which toxins are flushed from the body. Symptoms may include diarrhea, skin rash and or possible headache along with several days of fatigue. It is important that you drink plenty of water to help with the detoxification.

Storing MSM Keep away from children. Store away from heat and direct light. Do not store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the MSM to break down and become less effective. Throw away supplements that are out of date.
